GAME OF THRONES CONQUERS THE EMMYS

October 8, 2015

This was the fourth consecutive year GOT has been nominated in the best drama category and came as the show topped the 67th Primetime Emmys as the most nominated show of the year with its fifth season in play for a whopping 24 awards.  Not only did “Game of Thrones” win for best drama this year it also won for best writing in a drama, best directing and best supporting actor, for Peter Dinklage.  Including technical Emmys, “Game of Thrones” took home 12 awards, completely shattering a record for the most statuettes in a single year.   Accepting the award for outstanding drama series, Benioff and Weiss thanked the show’s cast and crew and HBO for taking a chance on them and “believing in dragons.”   Dinklage said he didn’t have anything prepared (he admits to chewing gum when his name was announced), and gave a shout-out to the other nominees — particularly Better Call Saul’s Jonathan Banks, who was the odds-on favorite to win.  Overall, the evening was huge for HBO, which also won for best comedy series (Veep, snapping Modern Family’s winning streak) and best miniseries (Olive Kitteridge). All told HBO won 43 Emmys this year, the most in the network’s 14-year history of dominating the awards.
