All the legendary steamboats of yore were sidewheelers: the Eclipse, the A.L. Shotwell, the J.M. White, the Natchez and the Robert E. Lee. So of course the Fevre Dream had to be a sidewheeler as well. Yet somehow I keep getting sternwheelers on my covers.

The Barron Storey art on the Poseidon HC is a case in point. Still, his ghostly white steamer and the half-seen face in the water evoke the novel splendidly. Storey's painting hangs on my living room wall, where it is often admired... though it's curious how many people see only the steamer, and never notice the face in the water. When the Storey art was reused for the inside cover of the original PB, the image was tinkered with to bring out the vampire more, but I prefer the subtlety of the original.

I also love the Paul Wright painting that adorns the Fantasy Masterworks trade PB from Millennium. Yes, it's another sternwheeler, damn it, but Wright's impressionistic rendering of the boat on the river is wonderfully moody, as lovely as a sunset. And the newest Fevre Dream cover, on the French edition from Mnemos, is evocative as well, and really puts you on the steamer's deck."

On the other hand, two Spanish editions of Fevre Dream have two of the ugliest covers ever stuck on one of my books (one is the original PB cover - we don't have the other up here yet, but it's coming, so be afraid, be very afraid). Hideous as they are, they do, however, correctly depict a sidewheeler... which goes to show that it's better to have a beautiful cover than an accurate one.
